STILLS IN MOTION

“Stills in motion” is about the interaction between the photograph and the moving image. How movement can be captured in one frame and conversely how a static object can be portrayed across multiple frames. The relationship the viewer has with images, and how that relationship can change. The show will coincide with the theme of Festival X, 2012, Otherwise than Seeing: Photograph, Image, Representation. “Photographs perform a variety of roles in our visual culture. As documentary objects, photographs are treated as visual evidence–objective records of what has appeared before a camera. On the other hand, the photograph isolates details and causes them to stand out, transforming them into beautiful objects and often suspending them from their place in a broader social, cultural or political context. From detail to the topical survey, from evidentiary to fine art object, from mass media to intimate aide-mémoire, the photograph is a visual and material site that builds, transforms and interrupts our perceptions and our understandings.”

- Randy Innes, Guest Essayist
