‘In Memory of Karen Aqua’
Karen Aqua’s innovative films occupy a unique place in the world of independent and experimental animation, and have screened worldwide at festivals in Europe, Asia, North/South America, and New Zealand. OIAF 2012 presents a variety of her award-winning films, from earlier projects to her final piece, including including a selection of animated segments she produced and animated for Sesame Street. Created from exceptionally refined and colorful drawings, Aqua’s style is also characterized by compelling subject matter, exploring the human condition through themes of culture and transformation. Aqua stated, “I strive to create films which are more poetry than prose, making visible the invisible.” This screening pays tribute to Karen, who passed away in May 2011.

‘En souvenir de Karen Aqua’
Les films innovateurs de Karen Aqua occupent une place unique dans le milieu de l’animation indépendante et expérimentale et ont été vus dans le monde entier dans des festivals d’Europe, d’Asie, d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud, et en Nouvelle-Zélande. Le FIAO 2012 présente une gamme de ses films primés, depuis ses premiers projets jusqu’à sa dernière oeuvre, dont une sélection de segments qu’elle a produits et animés pour Sesame Street.
Le style d’Aqua, créé à partir de dessins au raffinement et aux couleurs exceptionnels, est aussi caractérisé par des sujets fascinants qui étudient la condition humaine au moyen de thèmes liés à la culture et à la transformation. « Je m’efforce de créer des films qui soient de la poésie plus que de la prose et qui rendent l’invisible visible, » a dit Aqua. Cette projection rend hommage à Karen, qui nous a quittés en mai 2011.
